Fire and Survival

Some of us love the adrenalin rush that comes with fighting fires and playing hero for a few days.  Not so many of us are so enthusiastic when it comes to "the dunker" especially when you don't manage to get a window seat and you end up chewing on someones foot as they kick for their life!

I must admit that I loved all the courses.

This page provides you with information on the firefighting and survival courses which all offshore workers must pass before going offshore and provides links to some of the course providers.

Minimum Industry Safety Training Standard (MIST)

On the 1st April 2009 Minimum Industry Safety Training Standard (MIST) was introduced. MIST is a training package designed for all offshore workers, regardless of their previous experience, it applies to offshore veterans and fresh out the box newbies alike.

MIST is comprised of the following nine elements:

  • Introduction to the Hazardous Offshore Environment
  • Working Safely including Safety Observations Systems
  • Understanding the Risk Assessment Process
  • Tasks that Require Permit to Work
  • Personal Responsibility in Maintaining Asset Integrity
  • Using Manual Handling Techniques Every Day
  • Controlling the Use of Hazardous Substances Offshore
  • Knowledge and Practices of Working at Height
  • Being Aware of Mechanical Lifting Activities

Basic Offshore Safety Induction & Emergency Training (BOSIET)

The BOSIET course is designed for offshore installation workers operating in the UK sector, with the objective of providing the platform crews with a comprehensive awareness of the daily hazards they may encounter in the time between "see you soon" and "welcome home" hugs at your front door.

The basic OPITO BOSIET course is packed into 3 days and costs around £600 (excluding accommodation)

The course is comprised of practical and theoretical sessions covering the many aspects of offshore safety including safety management systems, sea survival, first aid, basic fire fighting & rescue, and helicopter safety and escape.

The certification issued on successful completion of the course is valid for 4 years, however be sure to keep a close eye on the expiry date as you must complete the 1 day "Further Offshore Emergency Training (FOET) before your basic course certificate expires otherwise it is absolutely mandatory that you repeat the full 3 day basic course and that's bad news for your wallet and it's 3 days out of your leave, good luck explaining that to your other half!
